“What matters most is not your background
but that you want to succeed.”

Insist, resist and persist. Independent Senior National Sales Director Gloria Báez built her Mary Kay business on those three magical words. “I tell Independent Beauty Consultants that when you love what you do, even challenges can be transformed into something positive,” says Gloria. Over the years, she has proven that no challenge is too great for her to tackle. She describes herself as an immigrant who only had the benefit of a sixth-grade education. “I always dreamed of having my own business. But with no English skills, phone or car … what other company besides Mary Kay Inc. would have given me an opportunity?” she asks.

It was Gloria’s husband who believed in her when she was too shy and timid to believe in herself. She was introduced to the Mary Kay opportunity through a complimentary facial and purchased some Mary Kay® products even though she knew she couldn’t afford them. Her husband encouraged her to keep the Mary Kay® products and then lent her his entire savings so she could begin her Mary Kay business. He even went with her as she handed out business cards until she could go on her own. “When I sold my first two Miracle Sets I realized that this is not work but something beautiful. In two hours, I earned what it took me a week to earn in my tamale business,” she says.

Through the Mary Kay opportunity, Gloria literally transformed herself from a shy, timid person to a dynamic public speaker and businesswoman. “What matters most is not your background,” she says, “but that you want to succeed.”
