Powerfully Positive. For Independent National Sales Director Mia Mason Porter, growing up with a mother who had a Mary Kay business was a training ground for college, her own Mary Kay journey and for life itself. “I learned emotional management early on,” she says. “I’ve become a master at finishing tasks and working with a sense of urgency, all while maintaining a sense of calm through the ups and downs.” With her mother, being an entrepreneur all of Mia’s upbringing, the stage was set for Mia to seek financial independence through self-employment herself.
Mia began her Mary Kay business as a college student at Howard University in Washington, D.C. giving facials to friends on campus. A year after graduating and armed with a degree in Accounting, she earned the use of her first Mary Kay career car and became an Independent Sales Director. With these accomplishments, Mia went from full-time student to full-time Independent Beauty Consultant to full-time Independent Sales Director and never looked back!
Her early success would not have been possible without the full support of her mother, mentor and friend – Independent National Sales Director Emeritus Sonja Hunter Mason. They are proud to hold the title of being the first African-American mother and daughter duo to become Independent National Sales Directors.
Mia’s life transitioned in 2009 when she became a single mother to her two children, Stanley and Kira. “Because I had so many positive Mary Kay role models who have been through the same life transitions, my Mary Kay business allowed me not only to survive, but to thrive, and taught me that I’m a survivor,” she shares. "I believe that real happiness is a choice and I work diligently to maintain a perpetual state of glee, never giving anyone or any situation the power to change my attitude." Through her experiences, Mia has learned the power of patience and to love people where they are at any particular point in their lives.
She loves spending time with the Independent Beauty Consultants and Independent Sales Directors who make up her National Area and who she affectionately calls her “Soul Sistahs”. She prides herself on being the kind of leader who shows women how to lighten up, how to decide to dance when they’re down, how to lose that frown, and how to get their smile back! Mia’s mission is to develop disciplined, passionate, emotionally-stable leaders who are developing a lifestyle of luxury to pass down to generations.
